These amazing, homemade, Soft and Sturdy Hamburger Buns are so simple to make and taste so good!
Ingredients
- 1 Cup Warm Water
- 3 TBSP Warm Milk
- 2 1/4 TSP Active Dry Yeast 1 Packet
- 2 TBSP Granulated Sugar
- 1 Egg Room Temperature
- 2 TBSP Butter Melted
- 3 to 3 1/4 Cup All Purpose Flour
- 1 1/2 TSP Salt
Egg Wash:
- 1 Egg Beaten
- 2 TSP Water
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine water, milk, yeast, and sugar. Allow to sit about 10 minutes. The mixture will start to look foamy on top. This means the yeast is active!
- Add in egg and butter.
- In a stand mixer, combine flour (starting with 3 cups) and salt. Using a dough hook attachment, mix together the flour and salt mixture with the yeast mixture. Allow to knead on medium speed for 3 to 5 minutes. If dough seems too sticky, add 1/4 cup of flour at a time. You do not want a dry dough, but it shouldn't be sticking to the sides of the bowl much.
- Shape into a ball and place into a greased bowl. Cover with a towel and let sit in a warm place until doubled in size. May take 1 to 2 hours.
- Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Punch out air in the dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each one into a ball.
- Place on parchment paper and cover with a towel. Allow to rise until doubled.
- Place a baking dish, filled halfway with water, on the bottom rack of oven. Preheat to 400 degrees F.
- Mix together the egg and water for the egg wash. Brush thoroughly over each bun.
- Bake for 15 minutes, or until tops are golden brown. Enjoy!

A Basic Burger Bun Recipe
How can a basic recipe be sturdy, soft, and absolutely delicious? It’s all in the ingredients and love you put into it! I wanted to make hamburgers for my family, but we are doing a challenge of spending less at the grocery. I had all the ingredients for a basic burger bun recipe, but I wanted it to be easy, and also not fall apart. I will share the techniques I used to get these shiny hamburger buns and amazing flavor! Here’s how to make burger buns from scratch.
How to Make a Burger Bun From Scratch
Equipment
- Stand Mixer or you can knead dough by hand.
- Small and Large Bowl
- Baking Pan with Parchment Paper
- Dish Towel or Plastic Wrap
- Baking Dish
Ingredients
Simple ingredients are needed to make any bread from scratch. Here is everything I used and you probably already have it all in your home right now.
- Warm Water: 1 Cup. Make sure it isn’t above 110 degrees F. It needs to be warm to activate the yeast. You will also need 2 tsp for the egg wash.
- Warm Milk: 3 TBSP. Again, make sure it isn’t above 110 degrees F, like the water.
- Active Dry Yeast: 2 1/4 TSP. Definitely a crucial ingredient!
- Granulated Sugar: 2 TBSP. You can also use honey. This helps activate the yeast because it feeds it. You don’t want to add too much though, or it can slow the fermentation process down, causing the dough to rise slower.
- Egg: 2 eggs. I’ve never made a hamburger bun recipe without egg. One is also needed for the egg wash on top after rising.
- Butter: 2 TBSP/Melted. This is the oil I chose for this recipe. I’m sure it can be substituted for olive, avocado, or vegetable oils, but I can’t guarantee the same taste results.
- All-Purpose Flour: 3 to 3 1/4 Cups. I love unbleached, organic flour, but a basic all-purpose will do.
- Salt: 1 1/2 TSP. Don’t forget this ingredient! There’s nothing like biting into bread that hasn’t been salted. The taste is just bad, so add the salt!!!
Instructions
- Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, combine 1 cup water, milk, yeast, and sugar. Allow to sit about 10 minutes. The mixture will start to look foamy on top. This means the yeast is active!
- Add in 1 egg and butter: You will need another egg for egg wash later.
- Let’s make the dough! : In a stand mixer, combine flour (starting with 3 cups) and salt. Using a dough hook attachment, mix together the flour and salt mixture with the yeast mixture. Allow to knead on medium speed for 3 to 5 minutes. If dough seems too sticky, add 1/4 cup of flour at a time. You do not want a dry dough, but it shouldn’t be sticking to the sides of the bowl much.
- Let it rest! : Shape into a ball and place into a greased bowl. Cover with a towel and let sit in a warm place until doubled in size. May take 1 to 2 hours.
- Time to shape: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Punch out air in the dough and divide into 8 equal pieces. Roll each one into a ball. I like to press down just to flatten them a little. Place on parchment paper and cover with a towel. Allow to rise until doubled.
- Let’s bake! : Place a baking dish, filled halfway with water, on the bottom rack of oven. This is going to help give it that shiny soft top. Preheat to 400 degrees F. Mix together the 1 egg and 2 tsp of water for the egg wash. Brush thoroughly over each bun. Bake for 15 minutes, or until tops are golden brown. I let them rest on the pan for 5 minutes and transfer to a cooling rack.
